McCabe Dental provides dental care for the whole family, but you must stay on top of your oral hygiene routine. For example, everyone who is old enough should brush and floss daily. It is essential to remove plaque before it turns into tartar. Fortunately, it is also one of the easiest ways to boost oral health.
Brush Twice a Day
Brushing just once a day isn't sufficient to maintain good oral hygiene. Dental professionals suggest brushing twice daily, preferably after meals. Most individuals brush in the morning and before bed. This routine helps eliminate food debris and prevents the buildup of plaque and bacteria. Aim to brush for two to three minutes each time, and for kids, try playing a short song to make brushing more fun and help with timing.
Use the Proper Technique
There is a certain technique for properly brushing your teeth. Hold the toothbrush so it's tilted at a 45° angle to your gums. Gently move the brush in short, back-and-forth strokes or small circles to eliminate food particles that can harm your enamel and gums. Remember to get the back teeth, tongue, and cheeks, and be careful not to brush too hard or too long.
Change Your Toothbrush Seasonally
Changing your toothbrush every three months is crucial to your oral hygiene routine. You need a fresh, clean toothbrush without any accumulated bacteria. Consider soft-bristled and electric toothbrushes because both are gentle but effective. You can even find angled toothbrushes to help you clean those hard-to-reach areas. The circular movement of electric toothbrushes makes it easier to clean your teeth thoroughly.
Use Fluoride and ADA Sealed Toothpaste
While there are many options of toothpaste on the market, a fluoride toothpaste is best for preventing cavities. You also want to ensure the toothpaste you choose has the ADA seal of approval to ensure you receive the oral care advertised on the package. Once you check those two things off your list, you can look for a flavor and color that appeals to you.
Floss Daily, Regardless of When
While brushing is important, it's equally essential not to skip flossing. Though it's easy to overlook, flossing plays a key role in maintaining good oral health by cleaning between the teeth, one of the most difficult spots to reach.
There's no specific time that's best for flossing, but it should be done at least once a day. If you're using traditional floss, take about 18 inches and wrap it around your fingers, leaving a few inches in the middle to work with. Gently guide the floss between each tooth using your thumbs and index fingers, moving it up and down and side to side. For added convenience, you can also use floss picks, small plastic tools with a piece of floss attached, sold in multipacks so you can use a fresh one each time.
